Sunday 22nd April

Race 8 would be the final race of the Sunday Early Points series with it all to play for. The sun was shining and the wind was coming from the South West 12-14 knots gusting 17. Thirty one boats were getting themselves ready.

John Sims would be the Race Officer assisted by Tony Christopher. There were sixteen fast fleet boats, fourteen medium fleet and one slow fleet boat. The tide was flooding and would remain that way for the duration.

The courses were set and the fast fleet set off from Baverstock on time at 1030hrs. Four laps were to be contested this week. The first to show was the International 14 of Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey. Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball in their 29er were next followed by the D-One of David Gorringe. Peter & Ginny would remain if front for the first three laps before retiring. The Mantle was then picked up by Geoff & Jo who would be followed across the line by Keith & Julie Willis in their RS 400. Meanwhile the final lap saw Nigel Walbank in his Musto Skiff climb up into third place from seventh. That was only over the water though. When the computer had had its evil way Geoff & Jo would keep first place with Keith & Julie second, but Nigel had not done enough to stop John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 from snatching third. Picture: Geoff Havers& Jo Barriball

In the medium fleet the Blazes were at it again. After the first lap the Laser of Tim Knight that figured in third place would be overhauled by one of them. That would again give them one two three. Myles Mence was showing the way with a couple of changes to second & third behind him. By the end of the third lap the positions had settled down with Myles in first, Ian Sanderson second & Stewart Watson third. These positions remained the same for the fourth & final lap and would also be the final result. With the 2012 Portsmouth Yardstick figures being applied from now on, will the Blazes be able to do it in the future with a handicap reduction of 6 points. We shall see.

Race 7 - Sunday 15th April

It was a chilly start with a Northerly wind for this Sunday’s racing but there was an abundance of sunshine. Mike Beggs was the race officer and 21 boats had signed up on the entry forms. There were twelve fast fleet, seven medium fleet & two slow fleet boats. The wind at 10.30 was coming from the NNE but would progressively swing round to the NNE  by close of play, starting at14 knots but gusting up to 24 knots at times.

The start was from Baverstock on time at 1030hrs with the medium & slow fleets starting five minutes later. The course was set of a windward / leeward course between Solent Bank & Black & Orange for the fast fleet. The medium & slow fleets were sent to Colten, Jack in the Basket, West Inner before rounding Black & Orange, then returning to Baverstock.

In the fast fleet it was the International Moth of Peter Barton that would come back first followed by Richard & Fiona Mayo in their RS 800. Next was the 29er of Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball. Eight of the fleet finished with the first lap order being maintained for the second and final lap and the result standing after the handicaps were applied.

In the medium fleet the Blazes would again lead the way with Ian Sanderson returning first followed by Stuart Watson. Tim Knight in his Laser would be third over the line. The order remained the same for the final lap, but when the computer had done its business Tim would sneak second, relegating Stuart to third place.

The Slow fleet had started at the same time as the medium fleet but a retirement from the Cadet of Jude Massey & Henry Collison gave victory to the RS Terra of Tom Goacher.

Race 6 - Sunday 1st April

Sunshine and a few clouds greeted the twenty five helms who had signed on for this mornings racing, ten fast fleet, twelve medium fleet & this week there were three slow fleet boats on the line. Richard Russell was the race officer assisted by Fiona Mayo. The tide was ebbing and the wind was fairly constant at 8-9 knots coming from the East.

Picture: Myles Mence chasing Ian Sanderson

The course was set for the fast fleet of moveable, West mark, Walbank, Plus, three times round. They were off on time at 1030hrs. Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in their International 14 were first to show, with John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 second and Matthew Thomas & Steve Nicholas in another RS 400 third. By the end of the second lap Giles Chipperfield in his D-One had passed Matthew to take third place over the water but the leading two positions were to stay the same for this and the final lap. When the results were calculated John & Becci had done enough to take first from Giles, relegating Peter & Ginny to third.

The medium and slow fleets were off shortly after at 1035hrs. Their course was to be moveable, West mark, then a second moveable, finally rounding West Inner before heading back. The medium fleet were set three laps and the slow fleet two. The medium fleet was dominated by the Blaze’s with Ian Sanderson leading Myles Mence at the end of the first lap by three seconds and Stewart Watson some thirty seconds behind. This order would remain the same for the remaining two laps with a Blaze one, two, three, and this time the handicaps would make no difference to the final result.

In the Slow fleet at the end of the first lap, the first to show was Ann Pike in her Gull Spirit. Tom Goacher crossed the line second in his RS Terra and the third and final boat in this fleet was Heather Chipperfield in her RS Feva. At the end of the second and final lap Heather had climbed up into pole position leaving Ann second followed by Tom in third. This time though, when the handicaps were applied, neither Ann (second) nor Heather (third) would stop Tom from sneaking the first place away by seven seconds on corrected time.

Race 4 - Sunday 25th March

Twenty three boats had signed on, eleven in the fast fleet & twelve in the medium fleet for race no 5 of the LTSC Sunday Early Points series. It was the first morning of British Summer Time. Tig Williams was the race officer assisted by Nick Fagan. The tide would be flooding for the duration and the wind was coming from the East ranging from 4 knots to 7 and there was wall to wall sunshine.

The D-Ones were out in force again this morning with Giles Chipperfield taking on the early lead in the fast fleet. Another D-One was next showing with Nick Simmons at the helm. John & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 split the D-Ones up keeping Dave Gorringe, in the third D-One behind them. By the end of the second & final lap Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in their international 14 had caught and overtaken Giles to take line honours and John & Becci had caught Nick to push him back to 4th. When the handicaps were applied though, it was back to the first lap, over the water positions with Giles first, Nick second & John & Becci third.

The medium fleet got away a few minutes later, Richard Russell in his RS 100 was first to show with Myles Mence chasing him in his Blaze, with another Blaze, that of Stewart Watson in 3rd position. Over the three laps of the medium fleet race the order & positions over the water would not change for the first six boats. At the finishing line Richard was first to cross, stretching out his lead over Myles to just over 6 minutes, Myles had also done the same to Stewart Watson, pulling ahead by almost 4 minutes. When the handicaps were applied it made no difference to the first three positions.

Race 4 - Sunday 18th March

In bright sunshine and with the promise of a moderate NW breeze, 21 competitors set off for a start out in the Solent. Minutes before the scheduled start the wind backed to the SW and increased. A new course was then laid by the RO Nigel Walbank. With the ebb tide pushing the fleet forward, the fast fleet saw two boats over the line, the RS 400 of John Cooper and Becci Wigley and the RS 800 of Richard and Fiona Mayo. Both realised there error and returned to start correctly but their fortunes for the rest of the race were to be very different. The medium fleet got away cleanly after watching the problems of the fast.

Picture : John Cooper & Becci Wigley

Both fleets made quick progress to their allotted windward marks, both fleets then headed inshore to cheat the tide only to run out of wind as clouds pushed the N wind off the shore. This was to be the pattern for the rest of the racing as the wind came and went, alternating between SW and N. Gennakers were up and down and the B14 of Declan Clamp and Gary Stones found themselves a long way out in front but not knowing the course!

In the medium fleet the RS 100 of Richard Russell also pulled well ahead at one stage but the fleets kept on bunching up as the wind came and went. With 2 laps completed by the leaders the tale ends of both fleets were finished using the average lap procedures. The leading boats went on to eventually complete a third lap but only after they had again parked for ten minutes when the wind again switched off close to the shore.

When the handicaps were applied Cooper and Wigley prevailed in the fast fleet with 2nd and 3rd places being taken by two of the boats that had only completed 2 laps. In the medium fleet Russell was not quite able to save his time from the Blaze of Miles Mence with another Blaze of Ian Sanderson taking third slot.

A Clean Sweep for the D-One’s

Seventeen boats signed on for the third race of the Sunday Early point’s series, six in the fast fleet & eleven in the medium fleet. There were again no takers in the slow fleet.

This week saw all three of the ‘new to LTSC’, D-One dinghies on the start line.

The Race Officer this week was Richard Lilley, the weather was reasonably good when the fog cleared, with wall to wall sunshine. The wind was not playing though. At the scheduled start time there was fog and only only 5 knots of breeze coming from the South. A postponement was in order. After a 50 minute odd delay the wind had moved round a bit to the South South West and increased to 8 knots. A mark was laid in Oxey Mouth and as they were almost at the end of the flood there would not be too much tide to bother them.

The fast fleet finally got away at 1118hrs with all of them going out of the river to the laid mark. The International 14 of Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey lead the way crossing the finish line first. 12 seconds later Nigel Walbank in his Musto Skiff and Giles Chipperfield, in one of the D-One’s, crossed the finish line and were both credited with the same finish time. Nick Simmons & Dave Gorringe crossed next in the remaining two D-One’s. After the computer had done its work though, the D-Ones would take first, second and third places, a clean sweep on handicap.

The medium fleet got away at 1130hrs with a 50 / 50 split, some of them going out of the river and some gabmling on the inshore route through the lakes. Round the outside proved best. Ian Sanderson in his Blaze took the line honours followed by Stewart Watson in another Blaze second. Third was Richard Russell in the RS 100 (the last one left, with Giles & David having defected to the D-One’s) Eric Sey in his RS Vareo came in next. Ian Sanderson would keep the handicap win with Stuart Watson second but Adrian Baker in his Streaker would steal third from Richard Russell.

The racing was close with many battles for line honours from 1st to last.

Race 2 - Sunday 4th March

Seven boats signed on for the second race of the Sunday Early point’s series, five in the fast fleet & two in the medium fleet. There were no takers in the slow fleet again this week.

This week saw the first event for the new fleet of D-One dinghies which had just been delivered to LTSC this last week, although only two of the three actually came out to play this weekend.

Picture: Tig Williams RS 600

The Race Officer was Geoff Havers assisted by Jo Barriball, the weather was not too bad, it was another crisp morning with 17 knots gusting from the South at the start time. This would rapidly change its mind and move to the North West dropping to 13 knots by the finish time. This must have caught a couple of them out at some stage or the other.

A windward leeward course was set between a movable and Black & Orange for the fast fleet. West Mark also came into play for the medium fleet. 6 times round was originally planned but there was only two laps recorded by the Race Officer.

The fast fleet got away at 1035hrs with the RS 400 of John Cooper & Becci Wigley being first to show followed by the RS 600 of Tig Williams and the D-One of Giles Chipperfield. The second lap saw Tig pass John & Becci to take line honours. Giles finished third with the second D-One of Dave Gorringe retiring and the 29er of Ben & Tom Oliver recording a ‘did not start’. Although Tig had passed John & Becci it was not enough to take the win on handicap with John & Becci sneaking back to take the win by 90 seconds.

The medium fleet got away at 1040hrs but with only two runners, the Blaze of Ian Sanderson and the RS 100 of Richard Russell, the race order and handicap result remained the same with Ian taking the win from Richard.

Sunday Early Points Series 2012

Race 1 - Sunday 26th February

Eight boats signed on for the first race of the Sunday Early point’s series, four in the fast fleet & four in the medium fleet. There were no takers in the slow fleet this week. It had the makings of a lovely day with wall to wall sunshine, but little wind & slow progress would prove to be the order of the day.

The Race Officer John Levell assisted by Steve Homewood announced a postponement at the scheduled start time which would end up lasting an hour due to the light & fickle breeze.

When the postponement ended the course was set from the river line. One movable mark was laid in the vicinity of Black & Orange. A second moveable mark was then laid in the river, not too far from the Club river finish line. Originally three times round was indicated on the blackboard, this would end up as a single lap, as what breeze there was, went from 5kts South West, to 4kts South. At least the wind and flooding tide would help them back.

Both classes finally got away at 11.30am making slow progress down the river. The first to show was the International 14 of Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey, however dropping their kite and having to go behind the ferry cost them the place as the RS 400 of Keith Willis & his crew nipped through to take line honours by some 20 seconds. In third place was the 29er of Ben & Tom Oliver with Tig Williams taking fourth. When the handicaps were applied Keith Willis would keep 1st place but Ben & Tom Oliver and Tig Williams would snatch 2nd & 3rd place, relegating Peter & Ginny to 4th.

Approximately one minute after the last fast fleet boat had crossed the line the medium fleet started arriving. Ian Sanderson in his Blaze took line honours from Richard Russell in his RS 100 followed by the Streaker of Adrian Baker, next came Wendy Bonney & Adrian Bateman in their Wayfarer. When the handicaps were applied to this fleet Adrian Baker found he had done enough to steal first place away from Ian Sanderson. Richard Russell took 3rd place from Wendy & Adrian 4th.
