Sailing
activities need a significant amount of volunteer support
Sailing is one of Britain's
most successful sports and is underpinned by a very large number of
volunteers who provide time, energy, skills and knowledge in a multitude
of ways.
There are a host of volunteers who work as committee members and Club officers.
These and others undertake many tasks organising and running events
and other projects including maintenance of club premises, the RIBs,
Fortuna, Baverstock and other club assets.
The Social Committee organise the Social events and the programme of
Winter Talks and the Club Open Days.
The Major Events Working party organises Club Open
meetings
The Marketing Committee promotes events and liaises with Sponsors
The Sailing Committee is responsible for organising the support of
on - water activities, the training, accreditation and rostering of RIB drivers, Race Teams
for dinghies and keelboats, Dinghy Cruise leaders and Saturday Sailing Supervisors in
accordance with the
LTSC
Dinghy Sailing Management System.

Volunteers
At LTSC we provide training for RIB drivers so that they can provide safety boat cover for
club dinghy sailing activities;
training for race officers so that there is a pool of race officers
to run the large number of racing activities organised by the
Sailing Committee
LTSC maintains training manuals for RIB drivers and Race
Officers.
These manuals are updated to reflect best practice and new/changed
legislation or ISAF/RYA rules/guidance.
LTSC RIB drivers and Race Officers are invited to an annual Forum so
that they can share experiences, keep up to date with any changes in
procedure and enjoy a free thank you meal.

Why
Volunteer?
|
|
Sailing, particularly dinghy sailing is very labour intensive in terms
of the support required.
All
who sail are benefiting (maybe unknowingly) from the voluntary efforts
of many people at international. national and local levels.
Organising this continued support is one of the
biggest challenges facing sailing and whilst LTSC enjoys considerable
support from a wide range of volunteers, there is an ongoing need to
train and support existing volunteers and to find new volunteers to
spread the load..
By volunteering you will be able to share experiences and gain from the
camaraderie and knowledge of fellow volunteers whilst carrying out an
activity that interests you and which enables you to return some of the
benefits you have received from other volunteers and thereby supporting
the sport and the club.
As time goes by and with increasing legislation, less availability
of volunteers and a greater willingness by some to pay rather than
volunteer, it is necessary for some tasks to be transferred from the voluntary sector to
paid staff.
The essential difference is that whilst the Club can direct staff to
undertake the work that is needed or sub contract specialist work,
volunteers are contributing time and effort on the basis of their own free will.
It is
in the best interests of the Club and its members that volunteers are
found appropriate roles so if you feel that your time, effort, skills
could be better used to assist the club please let the Club Secretary or
Sailing Secretary know..
