The World of
Sailing adopted
the World Wide Web as the communication channel
of the future in 1995 following the widespread interest in the Americas
Cup when
OneAustralia sank - the photo was viewed online in over 60
countries.
Now

Update
2007
The vision in 1995 was that sailing would continue to struggle to gain
any significant TV coverage other than in countries like New Zealand
where sailing is the national sport.
Although few people had access to the internet in 1995 and normal
connection speeds were 9,600 bits per sec which meant it took several
minutes for a photograph to appear on the screen, it was evident that
technology would in due course reach the stage it is today and there was
a hope that video & TV would be available over the Internet so that
sports like sailing could develop their own channels.
At the
time of the talk Sail TV had been launched. YouTube technology and the
growth of vlogs has accelerated the potential for promoting sailing over
the Internet.

provided at the request of those attending the talk "Sailing on the
Internet" by Richard Phillips at LTSC on 22 March 2006.
Richard was involved with the project to launch
www.sailing.org and gave a presentation
to International Class Associations at the IYRU Conference in 1995 following
the launch.
